State-owned engineering and consultancy company Engineers India Ltd (EIL) has signed a preliminary agreement with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) to extend engineering services for the development of small modular reactors.

According to an official statement, this strategic collaboration is aligned with the government’s vision to accelerate nuclear power adoption, enabling clean, green, and reliable energy. It aims to strengthen India’s energy security while contributing to the Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat, with a target of achieving 100 gigawatt nuclear power capacity by 2047.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlines the scope of “engineering services towards development of conceptual design and engineering of structures, systems, and components of Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR).“

The MoU signing took place on August 12 at NPCIL’s Mumbai office in the presence of EIL Chairman & Managing Director Vartika Shukla, NPCIL Chairman & Managing Director B C Pathak, along with senior management representatives from both organizations.

EIL, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), has been providing end-to-end services from concept to commissioning across multiple industrial sectors. NPCIL, operating under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), is responsible for setting up and managing nuclear power plants across the country.
