The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved four additional semiconductor manufacturing projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), expanding the nation’s chip-making footprint. Two units will be set up in Odisha, while Andhra Pradesh and Punjab will each get one facility.

With these approvals, India now has 10 semiconductor projects worth nearly ₹1.60 trillion spread across six states. These initiatives aim to ramp up domestic chip production, enhance the electronics manufacturing ecosystem, and create thousands of jobs.

The new projects are from SiCSem, Continental Device India Pvt. Ltd (CDIL), 3D Glass Solutions Inc., and Advanced System in Package (ASIP) Technologies. Together, they will bring in an investment of about ₹4,600 crore and generate direct employment for 2,034 skilled professionals, in addition to several indirect jobs.

Project details:

  • Odisha: SiCSem and 3D Glass Solutions facilities.
  • Punjab: CDIL’s expanded Mohali plant.
  • Andhra Pradesh: ASIP manufacturing unit.

SiCSem in Odisha will establish India’s first commercial compound semiconductor fab in Bhubaneswar’s Info Valley, producing Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices for defence, EVs, railways, solar inverters, and more. Annual output will be 60,000 wafers and 96 million packaged units.

3D Glass Solutions in Odisha will set up a high-tech facility for advanced semiconductor packaging and embedded glass substrates, with a capacity of 69,600 substrates, 50 million assembled units, and 13,200 advanced modules, catering to AI, defence, automotive, photonics, and communications.

ASIP in Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with APACT Co. Ltd, South Korea, will produce 96 million units annually for use in mobile phones, set-top boxes, and automobiles.

CDIL in Punjab will expand its Mohali plant to manufacture MOSFETs, IGBTs, Schottky diodes, and transistors, with an annual capacity of 158.38 million units for EVs, renewable energy, industrial systems, and telecom.

These projects are expected to further solidify India’s semiconductor ecosystem, complementing existing government-supported infrastructure across 278 academic institutions and 72 startups.
