Ashwini Vaishnaw Inaugurates India’s First Tempered Glass Manufacturing Facility for Mobiles at Noida

Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw today inaugurated India’s first Tempered Glass Manufacturing Facility for Mobile Devices at Noida, established by Optiemus Electronics in collaboration with Corning Inc., USA. The facility will manufacture tempered glass under the globally recognised brand “Engineered by Corning”, catering to both domestic and international markets.

Speaking at the launch, Shri Vaishnaw said the milestone reflects the growing strength of Make in India. He highlighted that India is now moving towards complete self-reliance in electronics, aiming to manufacture every mobile phone component domestically—from cover glass and chips to laptop and server parts. He further announced that a Made-in-India chip will soon be rolled out, reinforcing India’s position as a global electronics hub.

Over the last 11 years, India’s electronics sector has grown sixfold, reaching ₹11.5 lakh crore in production, with exports of ₹3 lakh crore and 2.5 million jobs created. The Minister underlined India’s design strength, citing the IIT Madras-incubated startup that has developed the nation’s first microcontroller.

He also noted that India’s 7.8% GDP growth in the first quarter of FY 2025–26 demonstrates a vibrant and innovation-driven economy. “The world looks to India with great expectations. Our youth must take this momentum forward to realise the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047,” he said.

The Noida facility, with an initial investment of ₹70 crore, has a Phase 1 capacity of 25 million units annually and will employ 600 people. Expansion to Phase 2 will raise capacity to 200 million units, generate 4,500 jobs, and bring India closer to becoming a global hub for electronics accessories manufacturing.
