Retired IPS officer Anish Dayal Singh has been appointed as the Deputy National Security Adviser (Dy NSA), marking a significant addition to India’s top security leadership. With a distinguished career of over three decades in security and intelligence, Singh brings deep expertise in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations that will directly strengthen the country’s strategic framework.
A 1988-batch IPS officer from the Manipur cadre, Singh previously headed the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) as Director General. He retired from service in December 2024, leaving behind a legacy of leadership in some of India’s most critical security institutions.
In his new capacity, Singh will work in close coordination with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, providing strategic inputs on pressing national security concerns. His portfolio will primarily focus on internal security issues, including Jammu and Kashmir, Left-Wing Extremism, and insurgency in the Northeast — regions that continue to pose complex challenges for the Indian state.
His appointment comes at a time when India is navigating a dynamic security environment marked by cross-border terrorism, cyber threats, and insurgent movements. Singh’s proven experience in handling sensitive operations and his understanding of ground realities are expected to be instrumental in shaping India’s security responses.
Beyond his advisory role, Singh will work in tandem with premier intelligence and security agencies such as the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), ensuring better inter-agency coordination and an integrated approach to national security.
The decision to appoint Singh is widely seen as an effort to reinforce India’s security architecture with a seasoned officer whose operational acumen and leadership experience will contribute significantly to safeguarding the nation. His role is expected to provide continuity, resilience, and sharper focus to India’s evolving internal security strategy.
