In a major administrative development, the Rajasthan government has appointed senior IPS officer Rajeev Kumar Sharma as the new Director General of Police (DGP). The appointment comes following the retirement of Ravi Prakash Mehrada on June 30, who held the position for just 20 days after taking over from Utkal Ranjan Sahu.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had recently sent a panel of three senior IPS officers—Rajeev Sharma, Rajesh Nirwan, and Sanjay Agarwal—to the state government, with Rajeev Sharma’s name reportedly topping the list.

Rajeev Kumar Sharma now steps in as the permanent DGP, succeeding Utkal Ranjan Sahu, who was appointed as the chairman of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) post-retirement. Until this transition, Ravi Prakash Mehrada, who also serves as DGP of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), was entrusted with the additional responsibility of state DGP.

Rajeev Kumar Sharma, currently posted as the Director General of the Police Research and Development Bureau in New Delhi, is among the senior-most IPS officers of the Rajasthan cadre. He has previously served as Director General of Rajasthan ACB, bringing with him extensive experience in law enforcement and institutional reforms.
