Senior IAS officer Santosh Kumar Sarangi (1994 batch, Odisha cadre) has been entrusted with additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The appointment follows the premature termination of Rameshwar Prasad Gupta’s tenure, just days before it was scheduled to conclude.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy officially announced the move, stating: “The competent authority has approved the assignment of additional charge of the post of Chairman & Managing Director, Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd., Ministry of New & Renewable Energy to Santosh Kumar Sarangi, IAS (OR:94), Secretary, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”
Currently serving as Secretary in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Sarangi brings a wealth of experience in governance and policy. He holds a Master of Arts and an M.Phil in Political Science from the University of Delhi, as well as a Master in Public Policy from Duke University, USA. His administrative trajectory includes pivotal roles such as Principal Secretary of the Science and Technology Department in Odisha, CMD of the Odisha Mining Corporation, and Director General of Foreign Trade under the Department of Commerce.
He has also helmed key export and education bodies, serving as Chairman of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Chairman of the Tea Board, and Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Education with concurrent responsibility as Chairperson of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
Sarangi’s appointment is viewed as a strategic measure to ensure experienced and steady leadership at SECI, an institution central to the execution of India’s renewable energy transition agenda.
