Raipur, May 11, 2025 — In a significant stride towards sustainable mining practices, Adani Enterprises Ltd. has rolled out India’s first hydrogen-powered truck to transport coal in Chhattisgarh. The initiative marks a pivotal moment in India’s transition to cleaner fuels in industrial operations.

The hydrogen fuel cell-powered truck was flagged off on Saturday by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai from the state capital, Raipur. It will be used for transporting coal from the Gare Pelma III Block in Raigarh district to a power plant operated by the Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL).

Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister Sai said, “The launch of this hydrogen-powered truck reflects Chhattisgarh’s commitment to sustainability. Such initiatives will significantly reduce our carbon footprint and set new standards for the mining industry.” He further noted that the state is not only a major contributor to India’s energy needs but also a leader in adopting environmentally responsible practices.

The deployment of the hydrogen truck is a collaborative effort involving Adani Enterprises, an international energy technology company, and an Indian automotive manufacturer. Each truck is equipped with three hydrogen tanks and can haul up to 40 tonnes of coal over a range of 200 kilometres. The hydrogen fuel cell system emits only water vapour and warm air, making it a zero-emission alternative to conventional diesel-powered trucks.

India has identified hydrogen fuel as a critical component in its strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. Several leading Indian automakers, including Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, and Eicher Motors, have begun developing hydrogen-powered vehicles under the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Tata Motors, in particular, commenced trials for heavy-duty hydrogen trucks in March 2025, operating across key freight corridors.

Vinay Prakash, CEO of Natural Resources and Director at Adani Enterprises, highlighted the broader vision behind the initiative. “Our goal is to pioneer sustainable mining practices by introducing technologies that minimise environmental impact. From hydrogen trucks and solar power integration to digital innovations and tree transplanters, we are building model mines that align with our commitment to responsible operations.”

The Gare Pelma III coal block, awarded to Adani Enterprises through a competitive bidding process, is part of the company’s larger effort to decarbonise its logistics network. The adoption of hydrogen trucks is expected to not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution but also lessen India’s dependence on diesel and crude oil imports.
