In a major step towards green mobility, the Uttar Pradesh government is set to launch electric air-conditioned bus services connecting key religious cities of Uttar Pradesh—Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, and Sonbhadra. The initiative is being rolled out with a dual focus: enhancing pilgrimage experiences and reducing environmental impact.

According to Parshuram Pandey, Regional Manager, Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC), the electric buses will operate between Prayagraj and Ayodhya to Varanasi and Sonbhadra. To support the operation, five charging stations are in the pipeline—four at the Varanasi Cantt depot workshop and one in Sonbhadra. These are expected to be operational within a month.

Each bus, once fully charged in about 30 minutes, will be capable of covering up to 150 kilometers. The modern fleet will feature 28-seater electric buses, equipped with air-conditioning, CCTV surveillance, GPS tracking, and panic buttons, prioritising passenger comfort and especially the safety of women travellers.

This initiative marks another milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to sustainable and citizen-centric public transport infrastructure.
