India’s renewable energy sector has achieved a historic milestone in FY 2024-25, with the total installed renewable energy (RE) capacity reaching 220.10 GW, marking a record annual addition of 29.52 GW. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has released data highlighting this remarkable growth, reinforcing India’s trajectory towards meeting the target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030 under its ‘Panchamrit’ climate goals.
Solar Energy Leads with 23.83 GW Addition
Solar energy emerged as the key driver of growth, contributing 23.83 GW to the year’s total capacity expansion—an impressive leap from 15.03 GW added in the previous fiscal year. With this, the cumulative solar capacity has reached 105.65 GW, comprising:
- 81.01 GW from ground-mounted projects
- 17.02 GW from rooftop solar
- 2.87 GW from hybrid solar components
- 4.74 GW from off-grid systems
This growth signals widespread adoption across both utility-scale and distributed solar energy projects.

Wind Power Surpasses 50 GW Mark

Wind energy installations continued their steady progress with 4.15 GW added in FY 2024-25, up from 3.25 GW in the previous year. The total installed wind capacity now stands at 50.04 GW, solidifying its position as a critical pillar in India’s renewable energy mix.
Bioenergy & Small Hydro Strengthen Diversification
Bioenergy reached a total capacity of 11.58 GW, including 0.53 GW from off-grid and waste-to-energy projects. Small Hydro Power (SHP) projects now stand at 5.10 GW, with 0.44 GW currently under implementation. These segments continue to play a vital role in strengthening India’s decentralised and diverse energy architecture.
Massive Pipeline of Projects Underway
Beyond the installed capacity, India’s clean energy pipeline includes 169.40 GW under implementation and another 65.06 GW already tendered. This pipeline includes:
- 65.29 GW from innovative solutions like hybrid systems
- Round-the-clock (RTC) and peaking power
- Thermal + renewable energy bundling initiatives
These reflect a strategic focus on ensuring grid reliability and round-the-clock clean power availability.
Driving India’s 2030 Renewable Vision
Under the leadership of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India continues to push forward with strategic reforms and project rollouts to meet the 2030 target. The latest figures underscore the government’s commitment to scaling up green energy, bolstering energy security, and fulfilling its international climate commitments.
