A cooperative taxi service based on the principles of “Sahakar se Samriddhi” is set to be launched soon, allowing the registration of two-wheelers, taxis, rickshaws, and four-wheelers. The initiative, announced by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah during a discussion on the Tribhuvan Sahkari University Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha, aims to empower drivers by ensuring that profits go directly to them.
The cooperative taxi service will be formed by willing taxi drivers, with management resting in the hands of its members. The objective is to democratise earnings, ensuring that the maximum profit earned by the cooperative is equitably distributed among driver-members. The model is expected to improve the income, working conditions, and standard of living of taxi drivers while enhancing service quality for consumers.
Cooperatives have been a pillar of India’s economic landscape, fostering self-reliance, financial inclusion, and rural development. With over 8 lakh cooperative societies serving nearly 30 crore members across 30 different sectors, the government has consistently promoted cooperative models to ensure inclusive growth. Like Amul’s successful cooperative model, this new initiative aims to strengthen the economic well-being of those engaged in the transport sector, competing alongside private enterprises under cooperative laws.
