Anurag Gupta

The Jharkhand government has appointed Anurag Gupta, a 1990-batch IPS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, as the regular Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. A notification regarding his appointment was issued on Monday by the Home, Prison, and Disaster Management Department.

Gupta, who had been serving as the in-charge DGP since July 26, 2024, also held the position of Director General of Crime and Research. He was promoted to the rank of DG in 2022 and subsequently served as DG Training before being entrusted with the responsibilities of the state’s top police position.

His appointment comes after a phase of uncertainty surrounding the DGP post. During the last Assembly elections, the Election Commission had removed him from the role, reinstating Ajay Kumar Singh, a 1989-batch IPS officer, as DGP on October 19, 2024. However, after the swearing-in of Hemant Soren as Chief Minister, Gupta was reinstated as the in-charge DGP, while Singh was assigned as the Managing Director of the Jharkhand Police Housing Corporation Limited.

With extensive experience in cybercrime investigations, Gupta has played a crucial role in solving high-profile cases during his tenure as ADG of the Special Branch and DG of Crime and Economic Offenses (CED). Now, as the state’s regular DGP, he has set his focus on tackling cybercrime, narcotics, organized crime, and crimes against women.

His tenure as the regular DGP will span two years, effective from July 26, 2024. Besides heading the police force, Gupta currently holds the position of DG of CID and also manages the additional charge of DG of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
