A High-Level Committee, chaired by Shri Amit Shah, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, has sanctioned Rs. 1115.67 crore for disaster mitigation and capacity-building projects across multiple states. This approval aligns with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of establishing a disaster-resilient India. It underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening disaster management frameworks at both state and national levels.
The High-Level Committee, which includes key members such as the Finance Minister, the Agriculture Minister, and the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, has carefully reviewed and approved two major proposals. The first is a project aimed at mitigating landslide risks in 15 states, for which the committee has authorised an allocation of Rs. 1000 crore from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF). This initiative will address the growing concern of landslides, particularly in states that are vulnerable to such natural disasters.
The 15 states included in the project are Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. Among these, Rs. 139 crore has been approved for Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh each, while Rs. 378 crore will be allocated for the eight North Eastern states. Additionally, Maharashtra will receive Rs. 100 crore, Karnataka and Kerala will each be allotted Rs. 72 crore, and Tamil Nadu and West Bengal will each receive Rs. 50 crore.

In addition to the landslide mitigation efforts, the committee has also approved Rs. 115.67 crores for the training and capacity building of civil defence volunteers in all states and Union Territories. This initiative, which will be funded through the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), is aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and response capabilities across the country, ensuring that the civil defence units are well-equipped to handle emergencies.

These measures are part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), under the guidance of Shri Amit Shah, to implement effective disaster management strategies. In recent months, the government has taken significant steps to enhance India’s disaster risk reduction systems, focusing on minimizing loss of life and property during natural disasters.
Furthermore, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the direction of Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, more than Rs. 21,476 crore has already been allocated to various states and Union Territories this year to strengthen disaster management mechanisms. This funding includes Rs. 14,878.40 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to 26 states, Rs. 4,637.66crorese from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to 15 states, Rs. 1,385.45 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF) to 11 states, and Rs. 574.93crorese from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF) to six states.
