The IndiaAI Datasets Platform, a key initiative under the government’s Rs 10,000 crore IndiaAI Mission, is set to launch by January 2025, according to Nand Kumarum, Chief Executive of the National eGovernance Division (NeGD). The platform, akin to US-based HuggingFace, will host datasets and AI models, enabling developers to create, train, and deploy their own models.
Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Kumarum highlighted the platform’s collaborative nature, stating, “The idea is similar to HuggingFace, where you have datasets and models, and developers can build on them.” He revealed that data from central and state governments, as well as private sector entities, will be part of the platform. Kumarum emphasised that while the task of amassing thousands of datasets is complex, a skeletal framework will be operational by January’s end.
The IndiaAI Mission, announced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in March, comprises six other pillars: compute capacity, future skills, an innovation centre, application development initiatives, startup financing, and safe and trusted AI. NeGD, responsible for executing the ministry’s e-governance projects, plays a pivotal role in this initiative.
Kumarum also touched on the potential use cases of generative AI within the government, such as drafting requests for proposals, enhancing office productivity, and automating parts of the verification and approval processes for infrastructure projects.
