GSECL

Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) is a state-owned power generation company with a diverse portfolio, including Thermal, Gas, Hydro, Lignite, Solar, Wind, and Energy Storage. As of today, GSECL has a total
installed capacity of 7,360 MW, and it is known for its pioneering initiatives in the power generation industry, such as India’s First Canal Top Solar Power Project, South Asia’s First Successful Turbine Retrofitting, and the Waste Land Solar Project. GSECL is committed to advancing sustainable and renewable energy solutions in Gujarat.

Initiatives in the Renewable Energy Sector – Contribution to Achieving India’s Green Energy Goals

  • Canal Top Solar: The first pilot project of 1 MW Canal Top Solar at the Sanand branch canal, Chandrasan,
commissioned in 2012, was awarded the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award for “Excellence in Public Administration.” The Council of Power Utilities also awarded this project the 7th India Power Award 2014 in the “Innovative Initiatives in the Power and Energy Sector” category.
  • Various Solar Pilot Projects: GSECL has commissioned several pilot projects, including a 1 MW Solar Project on Ash Dyke at Gandhinagar TPS in 2012, 2×1 MW Agri Solar Projects at Sikka TPS & Kutch Lignite TPS in 2016, and a 150 TR Solar Thermal AC at the Admin Office of Gandhinagar TPS in 2018.
  • Government Waste Land Scheme: To provide daytime cheaper power to the farmers and consumers of Gujarat, the Government of Gujarat introduced a policy for the “Development of Solar PV Projects on Government Waste Land” on 7th March 2019. Under this policy, GSECL was tasked with developing about 2,500 MW of gridconnected Solar PV projects on government wasteland near GETCO substations. GSECL identified government wastelands across various districts of Gujarat and conducted feasibility studies for installation capacities. Under this scheme, a total of 273.5 MW of solar projects have been commissioned, with 552.5 MW projects currently under commissioning.

Benefits of the scheme include:

  1. Cheaper power for consumers and farmers
  2. Sustainable development and reduced use of fossil fuels
  3. Preservation of fertile land, minimising ecological imbalance and mitigating climate change’s impact on biodiversity
  4. Reduced transmission network requirements and transmission losses
  5. Social and economic development of nearby villages
  6. Shifting agricultural night load to daytime by enhancing daytime power availability

India’s First Large-Scale UtilityBased Battery Energy Storage (BESS) Project with PV Solar Tracker System:

On 21st April 2024, GSECL commissioned a 35 MW Solar PV project with 57 MWh BESS at KLTPS Panandhro, District Kutch. This project helps maintain grid stability by charging the BESS during the day using solar generation and discharging energy to the grid during peak hours to meet energy demand.

Khavda RE Park Development: GSECL is developing a solar park with a capacity of 3,325 MW on 6,650 hectares of allocated land at the world’s largest solar park in Khavda, Kutch district, Gujarat.

  • Pumped Storage Projects (PSP): GSECL has identified 100 potential PSP sites in Gujarat with a combined storage capacity of 30 GW. The corporation is planning to establish more than 9,460 MW of PSP projects, with processes already initiated for 3,300 MW capacity projects.
  • Floating Solar Projects: GSECL is at the forefront of renewable energy innovation and has explored the potential of floating solar projects to address land constraints. The corporation plans to establish 3,560 MW of floating solar projects, with feasibility studies and Detailed Project Reports completed for 2,540 MW projects.
