Aircraft Facility in Gujarat

Vadodara, October 28, 2024 – In a major boost for India’s aerospace industry, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, inaugurated the TATA Aircraft Complex in Vadodara, Gujarat, dedicated to manufacturing C-295 military aircraft. The facility, established by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in collaboration with Airbus, reflects the growing India-Spain partnership and reinforces India’s role as a significant player in global defence manufacturing.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the C-295 project symbolizes India’s progress in defence manufacturing and supports the country’s “Make in India, Make for the World” mission. He expressed optimism that the new factory, which has been built at record speed since its foundation stone was laid in 2022, would soon produce aircraft for both national use and export.

“This state-of-the-art facility stands as a testament to New India’s vision of a robust defence manufacturing sector,” Prime Minister Modi noted. He highlighted that the plant’s establishment marks a transformation in India’s approach to the defence industry, which now focuses on local production and fostering private sector participation. Over the last decade, India has worked to reduce its reliance on imports by empowering defence research organizations, creating defence corridors in states like Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and driving innovation through initiatives like the iDEX program.

Prime Minister Sanchez praised the facility’s opening, marking his first official visit to India as a promising step in strengthening India-Spain relations. He underscored the shared commitment to advancing technology and defence cooperation.

In a nod to the workforce, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the factory’s expected role in generating thousands of jobs and supporting small- and medium-sized enterprises across India. The facility will produce approximately 18,000 parts needed for the C-295 aircraft, further empowering India’s local manufacturing ecosystem.

The C-295 program requires a total of 56 aircraft, of which Airbus will deliver 16 directly from Spain, with the remaining 40 to be manufactured in Vadodara. This collaboration marks India’s first private-sector final assembly line for military aircraft, representing a significant leap forward for the nation’s aerospace capabilities.
