GERMI

The Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute (GERMI) prioritizes sustainability as a central aspect of its mission, reflecting the need for cleaner and more efficient energy solutions. The institute recognizes the importance of renewable energy (RE) and sustainable practices in addressing climate change, reducing environmental impacts, and ensuring long-term energy security. Its commitment to sustainability aligns with global trends and significantly contributes to India’s sustainable development goals. This dedication is evident in GERMI’s research and development initiatives, which aim to advance technologies that support environmental responsibility and balance economic progress with ecological preservation.

The institute has initiated several impactful projects in Gujarat and across India, focusing on RE, emerging technologies like hydrogen and battery energy storage systems (BESS), biogas, and geological data processing. A notable achievement is the world’s first canal-top solar PV plant, which showcases its innovative approach to solar energy solutions. Additionally, GERMI launched India’s first rooftop solar PV program in Gujarat, promoting the adoption of solar energy in urban areas and directly reaching homes.

GERMI’s projects also include the solarisation of the Modhera Sun Temple and Town, integrating renewable energy
into heritage sites, and the development of the Charanka Solar Park, Asia’s first solar power park, reinforcing Gujarat’s leadership in solar energy. The institute’s innovation extends to the creation of a microgrid at the CMPDI campus in Ranchi, Jharkhand, demonstrating sustainable energy solutions tailored to community needs. Furthermore, GERMI established India’s first Green Hydrogen Generation plant, advancing capacitybuilding in electrolysers, fuel cells, battery storage, and hydrogen storage technologies.

The institute has developed a roadmap for offshore wind power in Gujarat, capitalizing on the state’s wind energy
potential. Its research and development also cover environmental sustainability and biotechnology, with projects
such as bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated sites and innovations in cellulose-based supercapacitors and batteries. These efforts underscore GERMI’s commitment to advancing environmentally friendly technologies.

The institute provides consulting services to central and state governments, as well as public sector undertakings (PSUs) like the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Coal India Limited and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation. GERMI also emphasizes enhancing energy efficiency, conducting feasibility studies, and developing Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies. These initiatives align with national campaigns like “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,” which focuses on energy from waste and compressed biogas (CBG).
