Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL), the joint venture between Adani Group and French energy giant TotalEnergies, has initiated the blending of green hydrogen in natural gas supplies to households in parts of Ahmedabad, marking a significant step towards cutting emissions and achieving net-zero goals. The firm announced on LinkedIn that it has started blending 2.2-2.3% of green hydrogen with piped natural gas in Shantigram, Ahmedabad.
Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources like wind and solar power through electrolysis, is now part of the natural gas supplied to 4,000 domestic and commercial consumers. The project, dubbed the largest of its kind, aims to increase the blend to 5% and eventually 8% as part of broader efforts to transition to cleaner energy solutions.
“This achievement marks a significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint and transitioning to cleaner energy solutions,” ATGL stated. “It reaffirms our commitment to sustainability and paves the way for a cleaner, greener future.”

Currently, state-owned NTPC supplies green hydrogen-blended gas to households in Surat, and GAIL is running a smaller pilot in Indore. However, ATGL’s project is the largest hydrogen-blending initiative in India so far.

ATGL’s CEO, Suresh P Manglani, hailed the initiative as “a significant step towards decarbonising India’s energy landscape.” The firm plans to expand this effort beyond Shantigram to other parts of Ahmedabad and other regions where it holds city gas licenses.

The blending of hydrogen with natural gas lowers greenhouse gas emissions and enhances energy security, but the high cost of hydrogen production and its corrosive impact on pipelines remain challenges. Tests have shown that up to 10% hydrogen can be blended safely with natural gas without affecting infrastructure.
