Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled three new supercomputers, “Param Rudra,” developed under the National Supercomputing Mission on Thursday. Worth Rs 130 crore, these state-of-the-art systems will be stationed in Pune, Delhi, and Kolkata to drive pioneering research across various sectors, including science, healthcare, and space exploration.
“With Param Rudra Supercomputers and the HPC system, India takes a significant step towards self-reliance in computing and driving innovation in science and tech. Today marks a monumental achievement in the science and technology sector,” remarked PM Modi during the launch.
The Giant Metre Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune will harness Param Rudra to explore Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) and other astronomical phenomena. Meanwhile, the system at the Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) in Delhi will enhance research in material science and atomic physics, and the S N Bose Centre in Kolkata will fuel advanced studies in physics, cosmology, and earth sciences.

In addition, PM Modi inaugurated two High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems—’Arka’ and ‘Arunika’—designed for weather and climate research. Valued at Rs 850 crore, these systems will be deployed at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune and the National Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) in Noida.

During the launch, PM Modi highlighted the critical role of technology and computing in every sector. “There is no sector that does not rely on technology and computing capability. In this revolution, our contribution should be measured not in bits and bytes but in terabytes and petabytes. This achievement proves that we are moving in the right direction at the right pace,” PM Modi emphasised.
