The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has appointed RS Sharma as its Non-Executive Chairperson, according to an official release. Sharma’s extensive experience in spearheading several of India’s digital transformations positions him as a valuable asset to ONDC’s mission of revolutionising digital commerce in India.
RS Sharma has been at the forefront of numerous landmark digital initiatives for the Government of India. He previously served as the Director General and Mission Director of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), where he was instrumental in the rollout of Aadhaar, the world’s largest digital identity program. Sharma also held the prestigious roles of Chairperson of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and CEO of the National Health Authority (NHA), where he led projects such as Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and CoWIN, the backbone of India’s COVID-19 vaccination program.
Sharma has been a key figure in ONDC’s growth since its early days. As a member of the ONDC Advisory Council and the ONDC Technology and Strategy Review Council, Sharma guided the organisation’s transformation from a pilot project to a national platform aimed at democratising digital commerce. His vast experience in digital public infrastructure makes him uniquely suited to lead ONDC through its next phase of innovation and expansion.
His strong academic credentials back RS Sharma’s illustrious career. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics, Mathematics, and Statistics from the University of Allahabad, an MSc in Mathematics from IIT Kanpur, an MS in Computer Science from the University of California, Riverside, and a Doctorate in Management and Public Policy from IIT Delhi. His deep understanding of both technology and governance has played a pivotal role in many of his successful leadership positions.
