Manoj Kumar Verma

The West Bengal government, led by Mamata Banerjee, appointed Manoj Kumar Verma as the new commissioner of Kolkata Police on Tuesday. Verma, a 1998 batch IPS officer, previously served as Additional Director General (ADG), Law and Order before his promotion. He succeeds Vineet Kumar Goyal, who has been transferred to the post of ADG, Special Task Force.

The decision to replace Goyal follows a late-night meeting between Chief Minister Banerjee and protesting doctors. Goyal, a 1994 batch IPS officer, was under fire for his handling of the investigation into the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital on August 9.

The reshuffle extends to other police officials, including Abhishek Gupta, Deputy Commissioner (North Division), who Dipak Sarkar has replaced. The North Division encompasses RG Kar Medical College, the site of the tragic incident that triggered the protests. Gupta faced allegations from the victim’s family of offering them money, fueling demands for his removal.

In addition to police transfers, the government also replaced Dr. Kaustav Nayak, Director of Medical Education, and Dr. Debasish Halder, Director of Health Services. Dr. Swapan Soren has been named the new in-charge Director of Health Services, and Dr. Suparna Dutta has been appointed as an Officer on Special Duty for Medical Education. Dr. Nayak will now lead the Institute of Health and Family Welfare, while Dr. Halder will serve as an Officer on Special Duty (Public Health) at Swasthya Bhawan.

These changes follow Banerjee’s recognition of 99% of the demands made by the protesting doctors, whom she called her “younger brothers.” The protests, which have been ongoing for 39 days, began after the arrests of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, Officer-in-Charge of Tala Police Station, for tampering with evidence in the case. Although the transfers are seen as a significant victory, the doctors vowed to continue protesting until all decisions are fully implemented.
