Centre appoints IAS officer Ashwani Kumar as MCD commissioner

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed IAS officer Ashwani Kumar as the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Ashwani Kumar is a 1992-batch AGMUT cadre IAS officer currently serving as Delhi Divisional Commissioner and Principal Secretary (Home).
Ashwani Kumar previously served as the Special Officer for MCD and was appointed by the Central government during the merger of the three municipal corporations in the second term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the MCD integration electoral process, Kumar fulfilled the role of Special Officer. He will replace Gyanesh Bharti, who was then the Commissioner of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation. Bharti assumed the position of Commissioner for the unified MCD in 2022.
Gyanesh Bharti, a 1998 batch AGMUT cadre IAS officer has been transferred to the post of Additional Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development.
He had been serving as the MCD Commissioner for an extended period.
