KMRL has been actively pursuing plans for expanding the metro railway network in Kochi with a clear vision to provide sustainable transportation options to a broader population. One of the primary objectives of the expansion is to improve connectivity across the city, linking more residential areas, commercial hubs, and educational institutions. This broader reach ensures that a larger population has convenient access to the metro system, highlights Loknath Behera, Managing Director, Kochi Metro Rail Limited in an exclusive interaction with Nisha Samant of Elets News Network (ENN).
Can you share some specific examples of how Kochi Metro has integrated renewable energy sources or energy-efficient technologies into its operations to reduce its carbon footprint?
Solar Energy, as a renewable source of Power, has an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change which is critical to protecting humans, wildlife and ecosystems. Every kilowatt(kW) of green energy can reduce carbon footprint by 1360 kg annually. Using solar energy can have a positive, indirect effect on the environment when solar energy replaces or reduces the use of other energy sources that have larger effects on the environment. Solar panels emit around 50g of CO2 per kWh produced in its first few years of operation. By the third year of having solar panels, most solar panels become carbon neutral. This is still roughly 20 times less than the carbon output of coal-powered electricity sources. Solar Plants do not produce any air pollution and therefore help in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction.
KMRL has contributed to this endeavour of Greenhouse gas reduction by installing 10.58 MWP capacity Solar panels which had approximately reduced GHG by 54,81,687 kg ( One unit of solar generation will reduce 0.4Kg of GHG) during the financial year 2022-23.
Given the theme of sustainability, what steps have been taken to ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all residents, including those with disabilities, in using the metro system?
A public transportation system needs to be equitable and environmentally friendly to all types of people in the city. KMRL has taken the following steps to ensure that the metro rail system is accessible to all residents, including those with disabilities:
a. Accessible Stations: Kochi metro stations with accessibility features such as ramps, elevators, escalators, and tactile guidance systems for individuals with mobility challenges or visual impairments.
b. Accessible Trains: Kochi metro trains are designed to accommodate passengers with disabilities. This includes providing designated spaces for wheelchairs, priority seating, and clear signage.
c. Audio and Visual Announcements: Kochi Metro has installed audio and visual information systems in trains and stations to announce upcoming stops, safety instructions, and other important information for passengers, including those with visual or hearing impairments.
d. Braille Signage: Usage of Braille signage at strategic locations within stations and trains to assist passengers with visual impairments in navigation.
e. Accessible Ticketing and Fare Systems: The ticketing and fare collection systems are accessible and user-friendly for individuals with disabilities, which include accessible ticket counters for disabled passengers.
f. Training for Staff: KMRL has provided comprehensive training to metro staff to assist passengers with disabilities and create a supportive environment. Staff are well trained about the needs and challenges of different disabilities.
Could you elaborate on the plans for expanding the metro network in Kochi and how it aligns to provide sustainable transportation options to a broader population?
KMRL has been actively pursuing plans for expanding the metro railway network in Kochi with a clear vision to provide sustainable transportation options to a broader population. One of the primary objectives of the expansion is to improve connectivity across the city, linking more residential areas, commercial hubs, and educational institutions. This broader reach ensures that a larger population has convenient access to the metro system.
The second phase of the Kochi Metro, also known as the “Pink Line”, is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by 2025. The phase II stretch will connect JLN Stadium to Infopark and will add 11.2 kilometres to the metro network. The project includes the construction of an 11.3-kilometre elevated line with 11 stations.
Kochi Metro Phase 3 plans to extend the metro line from Aluva to Angamaly and connect it to the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery. Thus, the phase includes a northern extension of Line-1 to Cochin International Airport and onward to Angamaly. There may be more phases to cover more areas in the future.
KMRL is actively working on integrating the metro network with other modes of transportation, including buses, water transport, and cycling facilities. This approach encourages multi-modal travel, reduces the dependence on personal cars, and promotes sustainable commuting options.
These expansion plans reflect KMRL’s commitment to addressing the growing transportation needs of the city while promoting environmental sustainability and enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents. The expanded metro network is expected to drive economic growth by improving access to business districts and commercial areas. Enhanced connectivity attracts businesses, investments, and job opportunities, fostering sustainable urban development.
In conclusion, KMRL’s plans to expand the metro railway network in Kochi are closely aligned to provide sustainable transportation options to a broader population. These plans showcase a holistic approach to urban development that focuses on eco-friendly practices, accessibility, community engagement, and economic growth. By doing so, KMRL not only addresses the transportation challenges of the city but also contributes to a more sustainable and inclusive urban environment. The expansion project serves as a model for other cities seeking to balance growth with sustainability and improved quality of life for their residents.
How does Kochi Metro plan to address the challenge of increasing ridership and reducing private vehicle usage to combat air pollution and congestion in the city?
One of the primary strategies for increasing ridership was the expansion of the Kochi Metro network to cover more areas in the city. By adding new metro lines and stations, KMRL aimed to provide convenient connectivity to a larger portion of the population, thereby encouraging more people to use public transportation. For increasing ridership the passengers must have seamless traveling patterns and seamless ticketing. KMRL aimed to integrate with other modes of transportation, such as buses, ferries, and other public transit systems. This would provide passengers with seamless connectivity, making it more attractive to use the metro for their daily commute.
To address the first and last-mile connectivity issues, KMRL has already implemented the rental bike system in all metro stations. Presently, KMRL has auto rickshaws and e-buses shuttling among most of the stations and key junctions for first and last-mile connectivity. These services are designed to help passengers reach metro stations from their homes and offices and vice versa.
KMRL has been offering competitive and affordable fare structures to encourage more people to use the service. Special promotions and discounts were implemented to make the metro more financially attractive compared to private vehicle usage.
What efforts has Kochi Metro made to encourage the use of electric vehicles or other eco-friendly modes of transport as part of the overall transportation ecosystem?
KMRL has made efforts to encourage the use of electric vehicles (EVs) and other eco-friendly modes of transport as part of the overall transportation ecosystem.
These efforts were aimed at promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation options in the city. Here are some of the initiatives and efforts that were in place at that time:
KMRL is integrating auto rickshaws and e-buses in its feeder network. This initiative aimed to reduce emissions and promote the use of clean energy for public transportation. KMRL is installing electric vehicle charging infrastructure at or near metro stations. This would encourage the use of electric vehicles by providing convenient charging facilities for EV owners. To address the first and last-mile connectivity issues; KMRL has already implemented the rental bike system in all metro stations. Almost 1000 bikes are available on the metro route for usage by metro passengers as well as other citizens.
