The Government of India, in partnership with states, has made significant progress in its mission to provide tap water connections to rural households across the country. As of November 29, 2023, approximately 13.69 Crore rural households, or 71% of the total, now have access to tap water in their homes, according to a statement by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Shri Prahlad Singh Patel.
The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), known as “Har Ghar Jal,” aims to ensure that every rural household in India has access to safe and adequate drinking water by 2024. Since its launch in August 2019, the mission has been working on various components to achieve this goal, including the development of in-village piped water supply infrastructure, the enhancement of reliable drinking water sources, and technological interventions to address water quality issues.
At the time of the mission’s announcement in 2019, only 3.23 Crore rural households (17%) had tap water connections. However, as reported by states and union territories (UTs) on November 29, 2023, an additional 10.46 Crore rural households have been provided with tap water connections, marking significant progress in expanding access to clean water.
The Minister of State for Jal Shakti highlighted that nine states and UTs, namely Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana, A&N Islands, Dadra Nagar Haveli & Daman Diu, and Puducherry, have already achieved the milestone of providing tap water connections to all rural households in their respective regions as of September 30, 2023.
The Jal Jeevan Mission continues to work towards its goal of ensuring clean and accessible water for every rural household, with ongoing efforts to retrofit completed schemes and manage greywater while building the capacity of local communities.
The government’s progress in expanding tap water supply represents a significant step towards improving the quality of life and health of rural populations across India.
