In a significant development today, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh revealed that the Government has taken decisive steps to elevate the nation’s nuclear power capacity from 7480 MW to an impressive 22480 MW by the fiscal year 2031-32.
According to Dr Jitendra Singh, the annual electricity output from nuclear power plants has witnessed a substantial surge, escalating from 35334 Million Units (including infirm) in 2013-14 to 46982 Million Units (including infirm) in the current fiscal year 2022-23. Additionally, the installed nuclear power capacity has seen a rise from 4780 MW in 2013-14 to the current 7480 MW.
Providing detailed information in written responses within the Lok Sabha, the Union Minister highlighted that the electricity generation from nuclear power plants in the ongoing year 2023-24 (up to November 2023) has reached approximately 32017 Million Units, falling short of the aspirational MoU target of 52340 Million Units.

Dr Jitendra Singh disclosed that the country currently operates 23 nuclear power reactors, with the cumulative electricity generated over the past decade totaling about 411 Billion Units. This, he emphasized, has helped in preventing the release of approximately 353 Million Tons of CO2 equivalent into the environment.

The Union Minister also underscored the ongoing efforts in constructing and commissioning ten reactors totaling 8000 MW across states such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh. In addition, pre-project activities for ten reactors sanctioned by the Government are underway, with a scheduled completion date set for 2031-32.

Dr Jitendra Singh announced the government’s in-principle approval to establish a 6 x 1208 MW nuclear power plant in collaboration with the USA at Kovvada in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh.
Highlighting the exemplary safety record of nuclear power generation in the country over the past decade, Dr Jitendra Singh emphasized that nuclear power is a clean and environmentally friendly source of electricity generation, available 24X7. He expressed confidence that the expansion of nuclear power capacity will play a crucial role in the country’s energy transition, aligning with the goal of achieving a net-zero economy by 2070.
Furthermore, Dr Jitendra Singh commended the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for its strategic shutdown management and early commencement of new units, ensuring adherence to schedule and avoiding unplanned shutdowns. He concluded by affirming the close coordination maintained with State Governments during all phases of construction and subsequent operations of Nuclear Power Plants.
