The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) in India is taking significant steps to achieve carbon neutrality and net-zero carbon emissions at airports across the country. In a bid to standardize carbon accounting and reporting practices, airport operators with scheduled operations have been directed to assess and document carbon emissions at their respective airports. They are also encouraged to adopt phased approaches towards achieving carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions.
Furthermore, MoCA has issued guidance to developers of upcoming Greenfield Airports and the relevant State Governments, emphasizing the importance of working towards carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions. This includes promoting the use of green energy sources.
As a result of these concerted efforts by the Government of India, several major airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, have achieved impressive Airports International Council (ACI) Accreditation at Level 4+ and higher, signifying their successful journey towards carbon neutrality. Additionally, a total of 66 Indian airports are currently operating solely on 100% green energy sources.

These developments were disclosed by Gen. (Dr) V. K. Singh (Retd), the Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, during a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability in the aviation sector.
