
The Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shri R. K. Singh dedicated to the nation a 660 MW Unit of Barh Super Thermal Power Project at Barh in Bihar today, August 18, 2023. The 660 MW unit inaugurated today is Unit #2 of Stage I of the project. The commissioning of this unit is another milestone in the government’s endeavour to provide reliable and affordable power to the nation.
Addressing the gathered audience, the Union Minister praised the dedicated efforts of Team NTPC, including engineers and workers, who played a pivotal role in completing this unit successfully. Shri Singh expressed his confidence in the upcoming completion of the project’s third unit. He applauded NTPC for contributing over 90% of Bihar’s power requirement, an impressive feat.
The Minister highlighted the remarkable transformation of India’s power scenario over the past nine years. The country has shifted from a power deficit to a power surplus, with a unified grid operating at a single frequency across the nation. Distribution systems have been fortified on an unprecedented scale, with more than Rs. 2 lakh crores sanctioned for strengthening distribution systems in all states. Shri Singh revealed that rural areas now enjoy an average of 20 ½ hours of power availability, while urban areas experience an average of 23 ½ hours.

Furthermore, the Minister shared that the Ministry of Power has introduced the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020, under the Electricity Act, 2003. These rules ensure that new electricity connections, refunds, and related services are provided promptly.

During the event, the Union Minister also honoured the engineers and workers who contributed to the completion of Unit #2 (660MW) of the Barh project. Local MLA Shri Gyanendra Kumar Singh and CMD of NTPC, Shri Gurdeep Singh, also shared their thoughts on the occasion, expressing gratitude for the support and guidance received.
Prominent figures including CMD of PowerGrid, Shri K Sreekant; Director (HR) of NTPC, Shri Dillip Kumar Patel; Director (Projects) of NTPC, Shri Ujjwal Kanti Bhattacharya; as well as senior officials from the Government of Bihar, NTPC, and other departments were present at the event.
