The Elets National Smart Railway Conclave, held on 6th July 2023 at Eros Hotel, New Delhi in collaboration with CRIS delved into the transformative potential of IoT (Internet of Things) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) in revolutionising railways and the transport sector. The event brought together industry experts, thought leaders and technology innovators to discuss, exchange knowledge, and explore cutting-edge solutions in this domain.

Under the theme “IoT & Cyber-Physical Systems in Railways & the Transport Sector” the conclave shed light on how these technologies are shaping the future of transportation, enhancing operational efficiency, and improving passenger experiences. It provided a platform for stakeholders to share insights, showcase innovative solutions, and discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with IoT and CPS adoption in the rail industry.

The event commenced with an Introduction & Context setting given by Sharat Sahai Mathur, GGM/CCCO, Centre, stating “Cyber-physical and IoT systems are becoming prevalent throughout the technology landscape in the country. The railway and transportation sector, in particular, holds immense potential for the adoption of these systems. The applicability of cyber-physical and IoT in this sector is substantial” followed by an insightful keynote address by G.V.L Satya Kumar, Managing Director, Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), highlighting “We have kept pace with technological advancements, ensuring that we are knowledgeable and capable of utilizing the latest technologies available. In the rail industry, the development of sensor-based technology has been fragmented, lacking a cohesive approach. However, various departments are currently making sincere efforts to identify these technologies and determine their impact on network capacity, compute and storage requirements, as well as the need for a unified IoT platform.”

The event served as a catalyst for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and innovation among industry leaders and technology providers. It showcased the advancements and best practices that will shape the future of the rail industry.

The exhibition area featured demonstrations of state-of-the-art solutions in railway sector by leading technology providers such as IBM, Intel, Hitachi Vantara, Kyosan, Cisco & L&T Electrical & Automation, Kyndryl, Trellix, Fortinet, Savex, Commvault, Adaniconnex giving participants hands-on experience and insights into their applicability in real-world scenarios. Networking sessions facilitated valuable connections, allowing delegates to engage with experts, exchange ideas, and explore potential partnerships in harnessing the power of these transformative technologies.

The conclave concluded with a resounding call to action, urging industry stakeholders to embrace the opportunities presented by IoT and CPS, collaborate in developing robust frameworks, and drive the adoption of innovative solutions that can optimize operations, enhance passenger experiences, and ensure the safety and sustainability of rail systems.
