An uprise in clean energy, sustainability, and other related issues has opened avenues in sectors like auto, hospitality, and travel for jobseekers having an experience in areas like climate change, environmental management, and sustainable waste management with as many as 5 Lakh direct and indirect jobs tied to the green economy being listed by these businesses, according to a monster.com report.

There was a 31% increase in the demand for such jobs in May 2022 due to the global transition to clean energy and sustainable practices.

Sharing his views, CEO of Monster India, APAC & Gulf, Sekhar Garisa, said that the climate crisis and pandemic have changed how people perceive sustainability-related issues.

“Today, the macro sentiment around environmental safety is paramount, and more and more companies have become socially conscious in their activities, striving towards a sustainable future,” he said.

Referring to the transformations taking place across, he added that policymakers, investors, and company executives are shifting their priorities and going green.”There is still room for this market to mature, and we expect to see improved growth across green segments in the coming months,” further said Garisa.

In India, the majority of jobs are in traditionally environment-friendly sectors such as electric vehicles and renewable energy. But there is also an increase in demand for green occupations in areas like agriculture, construction, engineering, manufacturing, and packaging.

According to the report, “Organic farming is a segment that employs many as the market has grown at a considerable rate owing to rising awareness on food consumption patterns and the growth of the organic food industry in India.”

In May, jobs in waste management and environmental services clocked an increase of 458% month-on-month. The research from Monster.com also reveals encouraging recruiting trends for green positions in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries (up 54%) and in KPO & analytics (up 42%).

Positions such as design engineer, energy analyst, environment officer, ESG advisor, hydraulic mechanical engineer, impact assessment officer, sustainability specialist and waste management analyst are particularly in demand in major metropolises like Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai.

According to the data, the majority of companies are recruiting workers with 2-4 years of experience. The most recent data from the private think tank CMIE (Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy), indicates that the overall job situation on the national front is “hugely disappointing”.

The data indicates employment in June was the lowest in the past 12 months.
Shedding light on this, Mahesh Vyas, CEO, CMIE said, “Employment fell by a massive 13 million from 404 million in May to 390 million. This is the biggest fall in employment during a non-lockdown month. Employment had risen by 8Mn during April and May 2022. The fall in May has more than wiped out this gain. In fact, employment in June was the lowest in the last 12 months, i.e. since July 2021.”
