Dr Anantha Nageswaran


Ahead of the Union Budget announcement, the Government of India has appointed Dr V Anantha Nageswaran as the Chief Economic Advisor (CEA), on January 28.

The CEA position was lying vacant after the former CEA Krishnamurthy Subramanian returned to academia in early December after serving a three-year stint. Dr Nageswaran assumed charge of the position after the orders were issued.

Prior to the new posting orders, Dr Nageswaran was serving as a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. He completed his Post-Graduate (PG) Diploma in Management from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad and did a doctoral degree in Finance from the University of Massachusetts for his work on the empirical behaviour of exchange rates.


As per a statement from the Ministry of Finance, Dr Nageswaran was serving as the Dean of the IFMR Graduate School of Business and a distinguished Visiting Professor of Economics at Krea University. He has also worked as a writer, author, teacher and consultant and has delivered lectures at several business schools in India and in Singapore.

In his career in banking, he has worked at the Union Bank of Switzerland (now UBS) and Credit Suisse in Switzerland and in Singapore. Further, he also served as Head of Research for Asia in 2006 at Bank Julius Baer & Co. Ltd. in Singapore and was later appointed as its Chief Investment Officer.
