
As many as 400 inmates have been released by the Tihar Cenral Jail Authority to reduce overcrowding in prisons in order to prevent the further spread of COVID-19, said the officials on Saturday, March 28.
According to a senior official from the authority, as many as 356 inmates were released on bail, while 63 inmates were released on emergency parole. The interim bail granted to the 356 inmates is for 45 days however, the emergency parole will last for eight weeks.
Earlier on Monday, the prison authorities informed that they are planning to release around 3,000 prisoners to ease congestion in jails amidst the COVID-19 threat. The authorities, however, informed that hardcore criminals will not be released. Prisoners who are in jail for a term of seven years can be released on parole.
