Prime Minister attends SCO Summit in Bishkek, holds bilateral talks with Presidents of China and Russia

SCO Summit in Bishkek

Attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met various world leaders including China President Xi Jinping and Russia President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

After arriving in Bishkek, Modi met Chinese President Jinping. According to Foreign Secretary Vijay Keshav Gokhale, the Prime Minister invited him to visit India later this year for informal summit, which Jinping has accepted.

As quoted by a national news agency, Gokhale said that there was a brief discussion on Pakistan. “PM recalled that he has made efforts and these efforts have been derailed,that Pak needs to create atmosphere free of terror and at this stage we do not see this happening. We expect it to take concrete action,” Gokhale was quoted as saying.

Later in the day, Modi met Putin and the two leaders reviewed all aspects of bilateral relations to further strengthen the strategic relationship. As per Gokhale, defence and energy were key focus during their talks. The two leaders also reviewed trade and investment ties.

He also thanked Putin for the AK-203 Kalashnikov rifles manufacturing unit in Amethi, an India-Russia joint venture. Gokhale further mentioned that President Putin has invited the Prime Minister formally to be the main guest at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia in early September.

The Prime Minister also met Afghanistan President Dr Ashraf Ghani and discussed ways to strengthen India-Afghanistan friendship. “India fully supports Afghanistan in its endeavours towards peace and prosperity for its citizens,” Modi had tweeted.

On the second day of the Summit, Modi is scheduled to meet Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev today and also hold bilateral meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Reportedly, there is no meeting scheduled with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The other world leaders attending the two-day SCO Summit are President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon,and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
