Alternative to IAS? Govt opens lateral entry for professionals

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Central Government has opened up the bureaucracy for lateral entry at the Joint Secretary level to 10 positions.


The notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) in this regard says, “Lateral recruitment to senior positions in Government of India.”

The departments opened are in revenue, financial services, economic affairs, agriculture, co-operation and farmers’ welfare, road transport and highways, shipping, environment, forests and climate change, new and renewable energy, civil aviation and commerce.

Initially, the recruitment for 10 departments will be on contract basis for three to five years, but will expand to other departments in the second phase, said DoPT.


As per the notification, any graduate over 40 years of age, including officials from the same level in State Government or with 15 years of experience in PSUs, universities, private sector companies or international organizations are eligible for appointment.
