BSNL plans to install Zero Base mobile towers

If everything goes as planned, state owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will soon install 50 ‘Zero Base’ mobile towers to strengthen functionality of telecom towers.

The zero base or Zero Site towers are known for their multi-functionality, as they can be used for street-lighting, charging docks for electronic gadgets, CCTV holders and Wi-Fi hotspots. According to reports, many of the civic bodies are considering installing such towers to illuminate roads and use them as Wi-Fi hotspots.

The state-run telecom operator was quite impressed with the ideas showcased at the ‘Mobile World Congress 2016’ and had requested companies like ZTE, Nokia, Ericsson and Huawei to provide quotes for purchase in India, according to sources.

Such towers are becoming quite popular in European countries where governments back similar kind of technologies. BSNL Chairman & MD Anupam Shrivastava told the media that they are planning to install zero base towers. “As an instance, the skyline in India is flooded with so many towers which have become an eyesore. The purpose is very clear. We want to exploit its versatility,” he said.

Sources said once these companies contact BSNL with their quotes, the latter would assess the cost of installation and purchase. BSNL hopes to have everything finalised and implemented in the next six months.
