The 1980 batch IPS officer, R C Tayal, has been appointed as Director General of the elite counter terror force—National Security Guard (NSG). At present, Tayal is Special DG of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and is heading its unit in Jammu and Kashmir.
Tayal’s appointment comes as the incumbent NSG chief JN Choudhury retired on May 31. He is likely to remain in the post till August next year.
Earlier, Tayal had served as an Additional DG in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) during his stint at the Centre.
NSG was formed in 1984 as a federal contingency force to undertake counter-terror and counter-hijack operations and later it was entrusted with the job of providing security to VVIPs.
