The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh will launch the country's first 3G services on the occasion of inaugurating the India Telecom 2008 today in New Delhi. The service will enable transfer of high speed data, video streaming etc. on mobile phones. The public sector MTNL is rolling out the 3G service in the capital making use of the necessary Spectrum allocated to it by Depatment of Telecommunication (DOT). In Mumbai, the services will be available early next year.

India Telecom 2008, in New Delhi a two-day event marks India's leading international conference and exhibition for the entire telecom system and is jointly organized by Department of Telecommunications and FICCI. The Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Thiru A. Raja and the Minister of State for Communications and IT, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia will also be present at the inauguration.

The theme of India Telecom 2008 is “Connecting Rural India”. The conference will cover topics like the Role of ICTs in Development, Connectivity for Rural India, e-Commerce for Rural India, Developing Market Initiatives, Innovative Technologies for Growth in Rural Area, Tele medicine/Tele education, Broadband: The Road Ahead, Mobile Entertainment etc. India telecom 2008 will have participation from policy makers, regulators, service providers, manufacturers, investors and content providers in the sector. Event highlights will include – CEO's Forum, Open House on regulatory and policy Issues and International seminar on telecom Centers of Excellence.

There will be 250 plus exhibitors from around the globe seeking business opportunities. The latest in the field of telecom will be on display. Exhibitors are coming from over 28 countries. The main countries are Russia, China, Taiwan, U.S.A., Korea, Dubai, Singapore, Japan and Bangladesh. The major players include BSNL, MTNL, WiMAX Forum, GSM Association, Acme Telepower, Huawei, Nokia, Siemens, Qualcomm India, ZTE India, Aircel Limited, Airtel, HBL Power Systems, Idea Cellular, Luminous Teleinfra Limited, Ericsson, Delta Energy Systems, E-Marine. The event will provide the opportunity to interact with the leading Telecom companies and the potential buyers.
