On Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu emphasised the crucial role of agricultural scientists in tackling challenges arising from natural disasters, climate change, and the overuse of resources. Speaking at the 40th convocation of Odisha University of Agricultural and Technology (OUAT), she highlighted the urgent need for timely development and dissemination of agricultural technologies to address these pressing issues.
President Murmu called on scientists to devise solutions for safeguarding soil, water, and the environment from the adverse impacts of climate change. She underscored that agriculture is increasingly threatened by rising temperatures, greenhouse gas emissions, shrinking per capita farmland, and unsustainable resource exploitation. Addressing these challenges requires innovative approaches to conserve soil health, manage water resources efficiently, and prioritize environmental protection.
She also pointed to the detrimental effects of excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, stressing the importance of sustainable agricultural practices. “Their impact on soil, water, and the environment is a concern that needs immediate attention. Young scientists must take up the responsibility to find effective solutions to these problems,” Murmu said.

The President’s address served as a clarion call for the agricultural community to embrace innovation and sustainable practices. She stressed that protecting natural resources and mitigating the impact of climate change are vital for ensuring the resilience of India’s agricultural sector and the overall economy.
As the convocation concluded, her message resonated strongly with students and scientists alike, emphasizing the need for collective action and innovative thinking to overcome the sector’s challenges and propel India towards a sustainable and prosperous future.
