Devendra Fadnavis

Devendra Fadnavis has formally assumed office as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the third time, following a highly anticipated oath-taking ceremony held at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. This milestone marks a significant moment in the state’s political history, with Fadnavis continuing his leadership of the state government. The event, which was attended by an array of prominent national and international dignitaries, signifies the formation of the Mahayuti 2.0 coalition government.

Eknath Shinde, the leader of Shiv Sena, has been appointed as one of Fadnavis’s two deputies, alongside Ajit Pawar, the senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The inclusion of both Shinde and Pawar in the government culminates a period of intense speculation regarding Shinde’s role in the newly formed administration. This marks the beginning of a new political alliance, consolidating the power of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra in collaboration with its allies.

Fadnavis, a prominent leader from Nagpur, has previously served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra and is widely regarded for his political acumen and governance. This marks his third term as the head of the state government, further reinforcing his political stature in Maharashtra. Eknath Shinde’s swearing-in as Deputy Chief Minister alongside Ajit Pawar also marks a significant development in the political dynamics of the state.

The event was attended by a distinguished gathering of political leaders, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, and Rajnath Singh in attendance, along with Chief Ministers from several states governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). In addition to the political elite, the ceremony saw the participation of leading industrialists and personalities from the entertainment industry. Notable attendees included business magnates Mukesh Ambani and Kumar Mangalam Birla, as well as Bollywood icons such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, and Sanjay Dutt. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was also present, reflecting the widespread support and significance of the occasion.

The formation of this new government follows the BJP’s resounding success in the Maharashtra state elections held on November 20, where the party secured 132 seats in the 288-member legislative assembly. This marked the BJP’s best performance in the state’s history. In alliance with Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde and NCP under Ajit Pawar, the Mahayuti coalition now commands a majority of 230 seats, thus ensuring a stable governance framework for the state.
