Ericsson, Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has further strengthened its network partnership with Swedish telecom giant Ericsson, awarding the company new 4G and 5G contracts for four additional telecom circles in India. This marks a significant move in Vi’s strategy to enhance its network capabilities and cater to the increasing connectivity demands of its users.

The deployment of 5G technology is key to Vi’s vision of offering high-speed, reliable network services, positioning the telco better to meet the needs of India’s growing data consumption. Ericsson’s new contracts will expand its services in the telecom circles of Delhi, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan, boosting its overall market share with Vodafone Idea.

A statement from Ericsson emphasised the importance of these new deployments, noting that they will be upgrading Vi’s existing 4G networks while rolling out energy-efficient and advanced 5G infrastructure. The contract includes the use of Ericsson’s Radio System products, including mid-band Massive MIMO antenna-integrated radios, aimed at ensuring optimal performance for Vi’s users.

This new agreement builds on last month’s announcement, where Vodafone Idea awarded contracts worth approximately ₹30,000 crore to major network partners including Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung, spanning three years. Ericsson has already been a key player in Vi’s network, and these new contracts signal its continued growth in India’s telecom landscape.

In addition to Ericsson’s expanded role, Nokia has also solidified its position as Vodafone Idea’s largest supplier, covering telecom circles responsible for over 50% of the company’s revenue. As part of its ongoing network overhaul, Vodafone Idea has replaced its previous Chinese vendor in Chennai and Andhra Pradesh with Nokia, underscoring the company’s push to modernize and localize its network infrastructure. With the rollout of 5G, Vodafone Idea aims to provide faster, more reliable connectivity that will support a wide range of digital services, making it a critical part of the company’s future strategy.
