Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar

In a recent development, former bureaucrats Sukhbir Singh Sandhu from Punjab and Gyanesh Kumar from Kerala have been appointed as the new Election Commissioners. This decision was made by a panel chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as confirmed by committee member and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on March 14.

Addressing reporters at his residence shortly after the meeting concluded, Mr. Chowdhury revealed that out of six names presented before the panel for the selection of the two Election Commissioners, the names of Mr. Sandhu and Mr. Kumar were chosen by a majority vote of the high-powered panel.

However, Mr. Chowdhury expressed concern over the absence of the Chief Justice of India from the selection panel and the lack of clarity regarding how six names were shortlisted from a pool of over 200 candidates by the search committee led by the Law Minister.

The six shortlisted candidates included Utpal Kumar Singh, Pradeep Kumar Tripathi, Gyanesh Kumar, Indevar Pandey, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, and Sudhir Kumar Gangadhar Rahate, all of whom are former bureaucrats.

“The names of Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu were ultimately chosen for appointment as election commissioners,” stated Mr. Chowdhury.

Gyanesh Kumar, who played a key role in overseeing the abrogation of Article 370 during his tenure in the Home Ministry, is among the appointed commissioners.

These appointments fill the vacancies left by the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey on February 14 and the sudden resignation of Arun Goel.
