In a noteworthy development, India has experienced a substantial upswing in coal production, marking a remarkable increase of 10.75% to 92.87 million tonnes in December 2023 compared to the same period the previous year, as confirmed by an official statement on Tuesday.

According to the statement released by the coal ministry, the country’s coal output for December 2022 was 83.86 million tonnes, highlighting a significant growth trajectory within a year. The coal sector, the statement added, has witnessed an unprecedented surge, with production, dispatch, and stock levels reaching unprecedented heights.

The production of the state-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) also saw a notable uptick, rising by 8.27% to 71.86 million tonnes in the last month of 2023, compared to 66.37 million tonnes in December 2022.

Providing a broader perspective, the statement revealed that the cumulative coal production in India for the period of April to December 2023 increased to 684.31 million tonnes from 608.34 million tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year.


In addition, coal dispatch in December 2023 witnessed an 8.36% increase, reaching 86.23 million tonnes, up from 79.58 million tonnes in December 2022.

Emphasizing its commitment, the coal ministry asserted that it remains dedicated to maintaining consistent coal production and dispatch, ensuring an uninterrupted supply for a reliable and resilient energy sector.
