India’s largest automobile company Tata Motors has decided to abolish all types of designations in the company. Tata hopes to inculcate an environment of teamwork so that creativity can be promoted. With this, more than 10,000 designations have come to an end in the firm.
Designations such as general manager, senior general manager, deputy general manager, vice-president and senior vice-president will no longer exist in the company.
A circular to the employees read that, this new concept will help in building “mindset free of designations and hierarchy.”
Managers with a team will now have a simple title post of ‘head’. Employees who are individual contributors, are largely at the front end and do not have any team member reporting to them will use just the function or department after their name.
“More number of roles have moved than people. People need to grow in terms of breadth and depth. We need to break the silos across the functions,” said Chief Human Resources Officer of Tata Motors, Gajendra S Chandel.
Accenture is working for Tata Motors, devising a strategy for them to tackle competition.
