The Jammu and Kashmir Government has increased the superannuation age of Judicial Officers in the Union Territory from 60 to 62 years, in line with the Supreme Court’s directions.

The decision was taken after consultation with the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The High Court recommended the increase, subject to an assessment of the officer’s fitness, eligibility, suitability, performance and continued utility beyond the age of 60.
The Finance Department later gave its concurrence to the proposal. It also made the approval subject to the prescribed conditions and necessary amendments to the relevant service rules. The Council of Ministers approved the proposal on September 22, 2026.

Retirement Rules Revised:
According to an order issued by the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the revised retirement age will take effect retrospectively from March 31, 2026.
The order said the Full Court of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, during its deliberations on August 10, 2026, recommended increasing the retirement age of Judicial Officers in the Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh to 62 years.

The recommendation is subject to officers being found fit and eligible for continued service beyond the age of 60.
The order further stated that continuation in service beyond 60 will depend on an assessment by the High Court. The assessment will cover the officer’s fitness, eligibility, suitability, performance and continued utility.
Necessary amendments to the relevant service rules will also be undertaken in consultation with the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
