Arunachal Pradesh Partners with Norwegian Firm for River-Based Clean Energy Project

The Arunachal Pradesh government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Norwegian technology company Tidal Sail AS to develop a river-based clean energy project, marking a significant step towards expanding renewable energy solutions in the state.

The agreement aims to establish India’s first River Kinetic Energy Demonstration Plant, which will generate electricity using the natural flow of river currents without the need for large dams or extensive civil infrastructure.

Pilot Project to Generate Clean Power from River Currents

The project will be implemented through the Centre for Earth Sciences & Himalayan Studies (CES&HS) and will feature a 500-kW River Kinetic Energy Demonstration Project.

The initiative is supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Innovation Norway under the India-Norway Green Partnership, reflecting growing cooperation between the two countries in the field of sustainable energy.

By harnessing the kinetic energy of flowing rivers, the project aims to provide an environmentally friendly alternative for electricity generation while minimising the ecological impact associated with conventional hydropower projects.

First-of-Its-Kind Technology for India

The demonstration plant will utilise Norwegian river kinetic technology that generates electricity directly from moving water, eliminating the need for large reservoirs or major construction works.

Officials believe the technology has the potential to offer reliable and decentralised power solutions, particularly in remote and geographically challenging regions where conventional infrastructure is difficult to establish.

Norway Highlights Arunachal’s Renewable Energy Potential

Speaking at the signing ceremony, May-Elin Stener, Ambassador of Norway to India, said Arunachal Pradesh’s extensive river network makes it an ideal location for testing innovative river kinetic energy technologies.

She also highlighted the expanding partnership between Norway and Arunachal Pradesh in areas such as geothermal energy, geotechnical engineering and sustainable infrastructure development.

Focus on Remote Area Electrification

Tana Tage, Director of the Centre for Earth Sciences & Himalayan Studies, described the project as an important step towards diversifying Arunachal Pradesh’s renewable energy portfolio.

He said the initiative is expected to support decentralised and off-grid electricity generation, helping improve energy access in remote and hard-to-reach areas of the state while promoting sustainable development.

Strengthening India’s Clean Energy Transition

The river kinetic energy project represents a new approach to renewable power generation by leveraging natural river currents without significantly altering the environment. If successful, the initiative could pave the way for similar projects in other parts of the country, contributing to India’s clean energy goals while improving electricity access in underserved regions.
