The Central Government has appointed senior IPS officer Alok Mittal as the new Director General (DG) of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D). His appointment has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and will remain effective from the date he assumes charge until June 30, 2029, the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The appointment brings regular leadership to the Bureau after the post had been under additional charge following the retirement of the previous incumbent.
ACC Approves Appointment of Alok Mittal

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Alok Mittal (IPS: 1993 batch, Haryana cadre) has been appointed as Director General, BPR&D, in Level-16 of the Pay Matrix.

Mittal is currently serving as Director General, Prisons, Haryana, and is also holding the additional charge of Resident Commissioner, Haryana. With his new assignment, he will head the country’s premier institution responsible for police research, modernization, and capacity building.

BPR&D Gets a Regular Director General
The appointment follows the retirement of Alok Ranjan (IPS: 1991 batch, Madhya Pradesh cadre) on June 30, 2026. Ranjan was serving as Director, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and was also holding the additional charge of Director General, BPR&D.
After his retirement, Ravi Joseph Lokku (IPS: 1995 batch, Uttar Pradesh cadre) was entrusted with the additional charge of Director General, BPR&D, with effect from July 1, 2026.
With Alok Mittal’s appointment, the Bureau has now received a full-time Director General to lead its operations.
Experienced Officer to Lead Police Modernisation
Alok Mittal is regarded as an experienced police officer with extensive administrative and policing experience in the Haryana cadre. During his career, he has held several important assignments across law enforcement, prison administration, and public administration.
His appointment comes at a time when the Bureau continues to focus on police reforms, modernization initiatives, research, training, and strengthening policing capabilities across the country.

The Bureau of Police Research and Development functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs and plays a key role in promoting excellence in policing through research, policy support, training, and technology adoption.
