The Kerala government has appointed senior IAS officer Bishwanath Sinha as the next Chief Secretary of the state. The decision was approved by the state cabinet on Wednesday, paving the way for a smooth transition in the state’s top administrative position.

Sinha, a 1992-batch IAS officer, will take over from the incumbent Chief Secretary A. Jayathilak, who is scheduled to retire on June 30, 2026.
Senior IAS Officer to Lead Kerala Administration

Currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary in charge of the Home Department, Bishwanath Sinha is among the senior-most officers in the Kerala cadre. His appointment to the state’s highest bureaucratic post reflects the government’s emphasis on administrative continuity and experienced leadership.

Officials indicated that the selection was made in line with the established principle of seniority, a practice generally followed in appointing the Chief Secretary.

Extensive Administrative Experience
Over the course of his distinguished career, Sinha has handled several important assignments in the state administration. His current role as Additional Chief Secretary (Home) places him at the centre of key governance, law and order, and internal administration matters.
Known for his administrative experience and policy expertise, he has been associated with various departments and governance initiatives during his long tenure in public service.
Tenure Until 2028
Unlike many Chief Secretaries who serve relatively short tenures before retirement, Bishwanath Sinha is expected to have a longer stint in office. He is scheduled to retire in September 2028, giving him more than two years to lead the state’s bureaucracy.
Administrative observers believe the extended tenure will provide stability in governance and help ensure continuity in the implementation of major development programmes and policy initiatives.
Smooth Leadership Transition
The appointment comes ahead of the retirement of Chief Secretary A. Jayathilak, who has been serving as the administrative head of the state government. With the new appointment announced well in advance, the government aims to ensure a seamless transition in the state’s administrative leadership.
