Kochi: The Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit 2025, held on March 12–13, 2025 in Kochi, Kerala, brought together policymakers, diplomats, energy experts, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss the evolving dynamics of global energy security and the transition towards sustainable energy systems. During the summit, Dr. Patrick M. Cronin, Chair for Asia-Pacific Security at the Hudson Institute and Scholar in Residence at Carnegie Mellon University, shared insights into the intersection of energy security, geopolitics, technological innovation, and international cooperation.

Addressing delegates from across the world, Dr. Cronin highlighted how energy policy has increasingly become a strategic component of economic growth, technological advancement, and geopolitical influence. He noted that global energy systems are undergoing significant transformation, creating both opportunities and challenges for governments and industries alike.

Energy Security Emerging as a Strategic Priority

Dr. Cronin emphasised that ensuring reliable and affordable energy supplies remains a critical objective for nations seeking long-term economic stability and resilience. As energy demand continues to grow alongside technological advancements and industrial expansion, countries are increasingly focusing on strengthening domestic energy production and diversifying supply chains.

He noted that energy security today extends beyond traditional concerns of fuel availability and encompasses broader issues such as infrastructure resilience, technological competitiveness, and supply chain stability.

Technology and Energy Transition

A key theme of the discussion was the growing relationship between energy systems and emerging technologies. Dr. Cronin highlighted that sectors such as artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure require substantial and reliable energy resources.

He observed that alongside renewable energy development, investments in advanced energy technologies, including nuclear power, energy storage, and next-generation grid systems, are becoming increasingly important for supporting future economic growth.

The discussions explored how innovation and technological advancement can help countries balance energy security objectives with sustainability goals.

Geopolitics and Global Energy Markets

Dr. Cronin also highlighted the geopolitical dimensions of energy policy, noting that energy exports, infrastructure development, and international partnerships continue to influence global economic and diplomatic relationships.

He explained that countries are increasingly leveraging energy cooperation as a strategic tool to strengthen alliances, enhance economic engagement, and improve regional stability. In regions such as the Indo-Pacific, energy partnerships are becoming an important element of broader economic and security frameworks.

Participants discussed how global energy markets are evolving amid changing geopolitical realities, technological disruption, and increasing emphasis on clean energy transitions.

Balancing Growth and Sustainability

The summit also addressed the challenge of balancing energy security, economic development, and environmental sustainability. While countries seek to ensure reliable energy supplies and support industrial growth, there is also increasing pressure to reduce emissions and accelerate the adoption of cleaner technologies.

Experts noted that future energy strategies will likely require a diversified mix of solutions, including renewable energy, hydrogen technologies, advanced nuclear systems, and energy efficiency measures.

International Cooperation Key to Future Energy Systems

Dr. Cronin stressed that global energy challenges cannot be addressed through isolated efforts. Stronger international cooperation, technology partnerships, and knowledge-sharing platforms will be essential for building resilient and sustainable energy systems.

The summit provided an opportunity for policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and investors to explore collaborative approaches to energy transition, energy security, and infrastructure development.
