Government-backed self-employment initiatives in Uttar Pradesh are helping rural youth transform their aspirations into successful business ventures. One such example is Ram Lakhan, a resident of Deoria village in Lakhimpur Kheri district, who has established a thriving dairy enterprise with support from the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP).

His journey reflects the growing impact of entrepreneurship-focused schemes being implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Government to promote self-reliance, generate employment and strengthen rural livelihoods.
From Aspiration to Entrepreneurship

Like many young people in rural areas, Ram Lakhan wanted to improve his family’s financial condition and start a business of his own. However, limited financial resources made it difficult for him to turn his plans into reality.

His opportunity came through the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, which provides financial assistance to individuals looking to establish self-employment ventures. After learning about the scheme through the District Industries Centre, he applied for support and secured a loan of ₹10 lakh in 2024.
The financial assistance enabled him to launch a dairy business, laying the foundation for a sustainable source of income.

Dairy Venture Becomes a Source of Livelihood
With the support received under the scheme, Ram Lakhan gradually expanded his dairy operations and developed it into a stable enterprise.
Today, the dairy unit produces between five and eight quintals of milk every day. The milk is supplied within the local market, helping meet demand while contributing to economic activity in the area.
The business has become the primary source of income for his family and has provided them with greater financial stability and security.
Creating Employment in Rural Areas
Beyond improving his own livelihood, Ram Lakhan’s enterprise has also generated employment opportunities for others in his village.
The dairy unit currently provides work to three additional individuals, demonstrating how small businesses can contribute to local job creation and economic development.
Officials note that such success stories highlight the broader objective of entrepreneurship programmes, which aim not only to support individual beneficiaries but also to create multiplier effects within local communities.
Government Schemes Driving Self-Reliance
The Uttar Pradesh Government has been placing significant emphasis on self-employment and entrepreneurship as part of its broader vision of economic empowerment and rural development.
Through initiatives such as PMEGP and other livelihood support programmes, aspiring entrepreneurs are being provided with access to credit, training and institutional support to establish businesses across various sectors.
These efforts are helping individuals move beyond traditional employment opportunities and create sustainable income-generating enterprises of their own.
Rising Income and Economic Stability
According to Ram Lakhan, the dairy business now generates a monthly net income ranging from approximately ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 after meeting operational expenses.
The steady earnings have strengthened his family’s financial position and provided a pathway towards long-term economic security.
His experience demonstrates how targeted financial assistance and entrepreneurship support can enable rural youth to build successful businesses while contributing to local economic growth.
Encouraging a Culture of Entrepreneurship
Officials believe stories such as Ram Lakhan’s reflect a broader shift taking place across Uttar Pradesh, where increasing numbers of young people are exploring self-employment and enterprise development as viable career options.
By facilitating access to financial resources and encouraging entrepreneurship, government initiatives are helping transform job seekers into job creators. The approach is contributing to stronger rural economies while promoting self-reliance and inclusive development.
