The Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit 2025, held on March 12–13, 2025 in Kochi, Kerala, brought together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and clean energy experts to discuss emerging technologies shaping the future of sustainable energy. During the summit, Akira Komiya, Senior Staff, Hydrogen Business Development Division, Honda Motor Co. Ltd., outlined Honda’s long-term vision for achieving carbon neutrality through hydrogen technologies and fuel cell innovations.
Addressing the gathering, Komiya highlighted Honda’s commitment to building a carbon-neutral society and reducing environmental impact through the adoption of clean energy solutions. He noted that the company views hydrogen as a key energy carrier capable of supporting the transition to a sustainable and low-carbon future.
Hydrogen at the Core of Honda’s Sustainability Vision
Honda has set ambitious environmental goals, including achieving carbon neutrality across its operations and products by 2050. According to Komiya, the company’s strategy focuses on leveraging both electrification and hydrogen technologies to reduce emissions while supporting energy-efficient mobility and industrial applications.
He explained that Honda’s hydrogen roadmap encompasses the complete value chain, including production, storage, transportation, and utilisation. Fuel cell technologies developed by the company are being explored for a wide range of applications, from passenger vehicles and commercial transportation to industrial equipment and stationary power systems.
Advancements in Fuel Cell Technology
Highlighting technological progress in the sector, Komiya noted that Honda has invested decades in fuel cell research and development. Recent advancements have resulted in significant improvements in efficiency, durability, and overall performance of fuel cell systems.
The company’s latest fuel cell solutions are designed to support various mobility applications, including cars, buses, trucks, and construction equipment. He emphasised that fuel cell technology offers flexibility and scalability, making it suitable for sectors requiring high energy output and long operational ranges.
Beyond transportation, Honda is also exploring the deployment of hydrogen-powered stationary energy systems capable of providing reliable and zero-emission power for facilities such as factories, warehouses, airports, and data centres.
Expanding Hydrogen Infrastructure and Manufacturing
Komiya highlighted Honda’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its hydrogen ecosystem through investments in manufacturing and technology development. The company is working towards expanding fuel cell production capabilities and improving the commercial viability of hydrogen-powered solutions.
Future-generation fuel cell technologies, he noted, are expected to deliver higher power density, greater durability, and lower production costs, making hydrogen applications increasingly competitive across multiple sectors.
Hydrogen’s Role in a Sustainable Future
Discussions at the summit focused on the growing role of hydrogen in global decarbonisation efforts and the importance of collaboration among governments, industries, and technology providers to accelerate adoption.
Participants explored opportunities around hydrogen infrastructure, clean mobility, industrial decarbonisation, and renewable energy integration as part of broader strategies to achieve climate goals.
The summit provided a platform for dialogue between policymakers, researchers, investors, and industry stakeholders working to advance hydrogen technologies and renewable energy solutions.
As countries and corporations intensify efforts towards achieving net-zero emissions, experts at the summit highlighted that hydrogen innovation will play a critical role in shaping the future of sustainable transportation, energy systems, and industrial operations.
