Vishvajit Sahay Assumes Charge as Defence Finance Secretary in Ministry of Defence

Senior officer Vishvajit Sahay has taken charge as Secretary (Defence Finance) in the Ministry of Defence, bringing with him over three decades of experience in public finance and defence administration.


A 1990-batch officer of the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS), Sahay steps into the role after serving as Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA), where he played a key role in overseeing financial systems within the defence sector.

Extensive Experience Across Key Ministries

Over the years, Sahay has held several important positions across the Government of India. His experience includes:


  • Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser in the Department of Science and Technology
  • Joint Secretary in the Department of Heavy Industries
  • Finance Manager in the Acquisition Wing of the Ministry of Defence
  • Director in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting

Within the Defence Accounts Department, he has also served in critical roles such as Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Pensions) in Prayagraj, Joint CGDA, and Special CGDA.

Strong Academic and Global Exposure


An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, and a law graduate, Sahay has also represented India at international training platforms. These include programmes at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and the George C. Marshall European Centre for Security Studies in Germany.

Strengthening Defence Financial Systems

With his vast experience in defence finance and policy, Sahay’s appointment is expected to enhance financial management, improve efficiency in defence expenditure, and support strategic decision-making within the Ministry.

His leadership comes at a time when India is focusing on modernising its defence infrastructure while ensuring robust financial oversight and accountability.
