India’s Climate Targets

The Union Cabinet has approved India’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2031–2035, which will now be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The move reflects India’s continued commitment to climate action while balancing growth and development priorities.

Stronger Emission Reduction Target

As part of the new climate roadmap, India has committed to reducing the emissions intensity of its GDP by 47% by 2035, compared to 2005 levels. This marks a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to decouple economic growth from carbon emissions.

Push for Clean Energy Transition

The government has also set an ambitious goal to achieve 60% of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2035. This includes renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear power.

The target is expected to accelerate India’s transition towards clean energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, while supporting long-term energy security.

Expanding Forest Cover for Carbon Sink

Another key component of the plan is the creation of a carbon sink of 3.5 to 4 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent through increased forest and tree cover by 2035.

This initiative aims to enhance natural carbon absorption, improve biodiversity, and strengthen ecological balance across the country.

Aligned with Long-Term Vision

The updated commitments are aligned with India’s broader vision of becoming a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Officials said the new targets demonstrate India’s proactive approach in addressing climate change while ensuring sustainable economic growth.

A Balanced Approach to Development and Sustainability

India’s revised NDC reflects a balanced strategy—focusing on clean energy expansion, environmental conservation, and economic development. The roadmap is expected to guide policy decisions, investments, and innovation in the coming decade.
